The Impact of Violence Against Women on Maternal Health : Women suffering from intimate partner violence are more likely to suffer from complications during their pregnancy, including miscarriage, low birth weight, and excessive bleeding. They’re also more likely to be denied medical assistance during childbirth by their husbands and in-laws. Speakers the University of California, San Diego, and the University of Minnesota discussed the effects of violence and abuse of women on child and maternal health at the Wilson Center on April 18. Learning From Success: Ministers of Health Discuss Accelerating Progress in Maternal Survival : “The gains we have made [in reducing maternal mortality rates] are remarkable; however, gains are fragile and donor resources are declining. Substantial investments must be maintained to safeguard these hard-wins,” said Afghanistan Minister of Health Suraya Dail on April 23. As part of the Wilson Center’s Global Health Initiative, the Advancing Dialogue to Improve Maternal Health series partnered with the United States Agency for International Development to co-host Minister Dail, along with Honorable Dr. Mam Bunheng, Minister of Health, Cambodia; Honorable Dr. Bautista Rojas Gómez, Minister of Health, Dominican Republic; and Dr. Fidele Ngabo, Director of Maternal and Child Health, Ministry of Health, Rwanda. These ministers spoke about the lessons learned in countries where there has been tremendous progress under challenging circumstances. Preventing Injuries During Childbirth: Programmatic and Policy Recommendations for Addressing Obstetric Fistula and Uterine Prolapse : Obstetric fistula is an injury caused by prolonged labor that creates a hole, or fistula, between a mother’s vagina and the bladder and/or rectum. The result can cause serious pain, stigma, and suffering as well as negative social and economic consequences. According to UNFPA, over two million women worldwide live with the condition and in most cases fistula is preventable and treatable. This event highlighted the prevalence of maternal morbidities in developing countries and shared lessons learned in prevention and treatment of fistulas. Panelists identified key programmatic and policy interventions and made recommendations for moving the campaign to end fistula forward. Also featured were two mahilako swastha (“women’s health”) quilts from Nepal. These spectacular quilts are comprised of hand-painted panels that tell the story of uterine prolapse, a condition that affects an estimated 600,000 women in Nepal and is closely associated with poor birthing practices and abuse. The panels were painted by survivors of prolapse in Nepal and assembled into quilts by American quilters from the Faithful Circle Quilting Guild in Columbia, Maryland. The project is managed by the Women’s Reproductive Rights Program in Nepal and the Advocacy Project in Washington, D.C. Strategic Steps for Global Action on Maternal Health Medicines : In collaboration with the Maternal Health Task Force, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and PATH, the Global Health Initiative presented a dialogue on maternal health commodities. On September 27, PATH released a report during the UN General Assembly summarizing a series of policy dialogues on maternal health medicines with various stakeholders in Dhaka, Dar Es Salaam, New York, Seattle, and Washington, DC. This event highlighted key findings and policy recommendations from the report to learn what needs to be changed to increase access to quality maternal health supplies, including oxytocin, misoprostol, and magnesium sulfate. Panelists discussed ways global and national policymakers, program managers, and advocates can partner to increase the quality, availability, and appropriate use of maternal health commodities and the impact that can be achieved.
